Fran and Ava

by Géraldine Maillet, published on January 5, 2022 by Éditions Fayard.

His favorite quote:

Tell me, do you remember it down to the smallest detail of this month in Paris?

When you are a novelist, do you remove from your memory the memories that are useless to your prose?

Or do they tend to merge, to infuse, to juxtapose like thousands of layers?

Did you loot me or did you prefer to abandon me

?

Why this book?

  • Because Géraldine Maillet relies on a truth:

Ava Gardner and Françoise Sagan met in 1967 when the actress was filming

    Mayerling

    .

During the confinement, she finds Sagan's tribute to the actress in the

    Elle

of February 1990. An article full of sensitivity, a magnificent and touching portrait, reproduced in the book, which questions the relationship which bound these two women.

And that's all it takes for the journalist to unfold an intimate and romantic story.

  • Because it's a meeting between two free women.

One is an actress who manages her career according to her sentimental life, the other is a sparkling novelist who crunches life to the fullest.

Their meeting around alcohol, seduction and sensuality will last a month.

A dense month that comes back to the memory of the actress when she meets the author in a crowded airport hall, not conducive to effusions and confidences.

A feeling of abandonment mixed with nostalgia and anger weaves an extraordinary monologue.

  • Because what torments Ava is knowing what's left

    of her history with Fran.

Physical love, passion or mold that rots his life?

In the tone of whispers and complaints – sometimes of alcoholic anger – Ava speaks of Fran with tenderness, evokes her life with Sinatra, Artie Shaw or the bullfighter Dominguin, her abortions and her wanderings in alcohol.
