Jennifer Lopez would never have had the shoulders to take on the music industry if her mother, Guadalupe Rodríguez, hadn't raised her the hard way.

“Look, my mom was also a fun mom.

My mother was also the mother who made me love musicals and introduced me to all styles of music.

I'm a show girl thanks to my mother,” the 52-year-old star told

Rolling Stone

.

“But I'm also able to survive the things I survived in this business because my mother was tough.

I don't think she was able to realize what she was preparing me for, but she did,” says JLo.

An outsider

Either way, Jennifer Lopez has always seen herself as an outsider for finding success after growing up in a working class family in the Bronx.

“I always felt like I was starting from the very bottom.

Always.

I always felt like I was the one who wasn't supposed to be in the room just because I was Puerto Rican, from the Bronx and most importantly a woman.

You see what I mean ?

All these things.

Not being born into a family with money.

Know nobody in this business.

I just came in saying, 'Damn, I'm just gonna try. I'm gonna try to fit in,'” she continued.
