• Ambre Gestin started cosplaying at the age of 39.

Six years later, she is famous in the middle under the name of Daeny Dutyphon.

  • After learning the codes and techniques of cosplay on her own, she creates her own incarnations of imaginary characters.

  • Godmother of costumed people at the Yggdrasil festival, which will be held on February 12 and 13 at Eurexpo, she likes to pass on her passion to all age categories.

“When I dress as Louis XIV, I

am

Louis XIV.

In cosplay, the role-play is just as important as the costume!

Ambre Gestin shows the Sun King jacket with which she won the Rhône-Alpes selection for the French Cosplay Cup in 2019. Seeing the finesse of the embroidery and finishes, it is hard to believe that Ambre Gestin only had three years of cosplay practice behind her.

And even less sewing experience…

"My passion was revealed relatively late, since I started at 39, and I'm going to be 45," she laughs.

“This universe had interested me for a long time, but what made me take the leap was my passion for

Game of Thrones

 !

I wanted to play Daenerys, and my cosplay name, Daeny Dutyphon, is actually derived from hers.

That's what decided me, without worrying about other people's opinions, and I learned on the job, all by myself.

Losing contests is the most formative

Her pleasant nature and her talent have won her sympathy in the very codified world of cosplay, where competition can be fierce.

Very quickly, she took part in many contests… and lost many of them.

There too, she laughs: “It's losing who is a trainer!

I learned like that, I improved like that.

Between "leisure cosplay", where you can buy the costume of your favorite character to embody it, and the "cosplay contest" where you have to have made your own costume, it is in the latter that your creativity and his taste for the stage flourished.

Which requires a significant investment: “My biggest costume was for the final of the Coupe de France, the Empress of China, which required 600 hours of work from me.

Over time, Daeny Dutyphon broke away from pure and hard cosplay: “I wanted to break the shackles a bit and have fun, trust myself.

So I do more and more interpretations, creations”.

She devotes herself to OC, “Original Characters, where you embody a character that you imagined, taken from a particular universe”.

At the Yggdrasil festival, where she will be the costumed godmother, a competition will decide between the best OCs.

"There are different worlds in Yggdrasil: medieval, steampunk, futuristic, Star Wars or Harry Potter... We can therefore present a costume from these worlds, but it will not be a cosplay since there will be no reference picture.

“What the jurors will look at, “is the thickness they gave to their character.

Some costumes may be a little less technical than others,

but where every detail will have a story.

And passion remains the main criterion!

The godmother will herself be dressed as Jeanne de Belleville, France's first corsair woman, and as "an interpretation of Ursula, the witch from The

Little Mermaid

, but in a retro Hollywood glamor version, with a mermaid dress all in scales!"

Her role as godmother, she sees it as "a benevolent accompaniment, to give a little boost to people who would like to get started, but who don't dare".

History to show that "if a quadra who knew nothing about it takes great pleasure in sharing this", it is never too late to become king, witch or corsair.
