A British driver who caused a serious accident while driving a van has been sentenced to 16 months in prison.

Just minutes before the accident, the man was filmed drinking from a bottle of champagne and rolling a cigarette, then typing on his cell phone.

Mason Coogill, 27, was arrested after a surveillance camera attached to the truck captured video footage of him opening a bottle of champagne as he was traveling along the motorway near Ingleton, North Yorkshire, on June 7 last year.

The driver - who worked for a potato delivery company - was also filmed "rolling" a cigarette, then sending phone messages with both hands, while several cars were driving in the opposite direction.

The truck driver did not pay attention to the road and was confused by alcohol, not noticing in time the car in front of him, in which were three children, which stopped at the traffic light, which led to a severe collision.

No one was seriously injured, and the three children miraculously survived, but the car was badly damaged.

At trial, Mason Coogill pleaded guilty to drinking alcohol and drugs and was sentenced to 16 months in prison with a 32-month driving ban.

In order to get his driver's license again, the young Briton will have to take the exam again, writes the newspaper "The Sun".
