• Seven to eight months of work are planned from the end of the year on the 113 at the crossing of Vitrolles, borrowed every day by 16,000 vehicles.

  • An infrastructure overhaul that will benefit the service of the airport, but also companies in the area of activity, starting with Airbus helicopter and its 12,000 employees and subcontractors.

  • The cable car project, linking Vitrolles station and Marseille/Marignane airport, with a stop for Airbus helicopters, is still relevant.

As we know, road traffic is particularly congested in the Bouches-du-Rhône and in Marseille.

In these daily traffic jams, the department has “its black spots”, presented Martine Vassal, LR president of the department and of the metropolis.

Among these, the 113 in its crossing of Vitrolles that nearly 16,000 vehicles travel every day.

This portion allows, among other things, to join the A7, to serve the airport and major companies, such as Airbus Helicopter and its 12,000 employees and subcontractors.

A time saving of 10 minutes on a 20 kilometer journey

In fact at peak times, you have to be patient.

In an attempt to remedy this, the department has announced a series of works on this portion "with congestion such that certain regular bus lines have come to take longer, but more reliable alternative routes" in terms of travel time, has noted Martine Vassal.

The work will start at the end of the year and should be spread out “over seven to eight months”, discounts the service in charge of project management.

These should not lead to lane closures during the day in order to limit the impact on users.

Entry lock and lane reserved for buses, widening to four lanes from Marseille for the Marignane/airport exit, additional access ramp, etc.,

The investment of 8.8 million euros, fully supported by the department, was nevertheless made possible "by the billion euros allocated as part of the Marseille plan" by Emmanuel Macron to develop transport, said Martine Vassal, then putting on his double hat as president of the department and of the metropolis.

The cable car still relevant, but not before the Games

Eventually, Martine Vassal also did not bury the idea of a cable car linking Vitrolles station (41 meters above sea level) and Marseille/Marignane airport (sea level), with a stop for Airbus helicopter.

This proposal remains the best economic solution to span the 113 reaffirmed the president of the department.

A project that she would have liked to carry out "the day before yesterday", and which will not be carried out before the 2024 Olympic Games. Because as long as the work to bury the high-speed lines under Saint Charles station is not done, -that wouldn't make much sense.

The Marseilles railway junction is indeed saturated with trains, allowing neither a great reliability of the Saint-Charles-Vitrolles link, nor an increase in rates.

Although the studies were launched at the very end of last year, the drilling of this tunnel is not expected before 2035. In the meantime, the department is counting on better road fluidity for its buses, while the airport aims to increase from 17% to 28% the share of its ten million annual passengers who go there by public transport.
