Kuwait increased suicide rates by 50% and launched the "Your Life is Dear" initiative to curb the phenomenon

In a step for public benefit associations in Kuwait to be on the front line of suicide, whose rates have increased significantly recently, the Association of Social Workers launched, the day before yesterday, Monday, the (Your Life is Dear) initiative to reduce the phenomenon of "self-killing", which was noticed in Kuwait, especially during Pandemic (Corona).

On the sidelines of the launch of the initiative, Association President Abdullah Al-Radwan stressed the need for community awareness to curb this phenomenon, noting that the initiative comes after an increase in suicide cases was seen, which is an alien phenomenon to Kuwaiti society.

Al-Radwan stressed the importance of intensifying societal cooperation to achieve the initiative's endeavors, which aims to limit the aggravation of this negative phenomenon, indicating that the association was quick to invite government and civil agencies to participate in it.

He explained that the motives that lead to an increase in suicides are related to psychological disorders, social isolation and weak religious faith, in addition to drug addiction and the danger of electronic games.

In addition, security sources revealed that the competent authorities had recorded 315 suicide cases from the beginning of January 2019 to the end of January 2022, which reflects the huge jump in the number of suicides inside the country since the beginning of the Corona pandemic, which also indicates the link between the pandemic and its psychological and economic effects with the rise in suicide cases. Especially among the people of Asian communities.

The sources told Al-Qabas newspaper that the security services recorded 13 suicide cases during the month of January of this year, stressing that suicide rates in the country rose by about 50% during the past two years.

The sources added that the majority of suicide cases were committed by members of Asian communities, pointing out that 4 attempts were made by the owners to end their lives, and cases of "attempted suicide" were registered against them last January.

The sources indicated that the security services expelled 20 expatriates, most of whom are of Asian nationalities, and some of them are of Arab nationalities, from the country during the past two months.

The newspaper published figures on the phenomenon of suicide in Kuwait, where 315 cases occurred in two years, and last January alone recorded 13 suicides, compared to 4 failed attempts, while official statistics reveal an increase in suicide rates in the country by 50%.
