Each year, between February and April, the young toads coming out of their hibernation seek to go to the water points to reproduce.
To do this, they often have to cross roads at the risk of being run over.
This is why, since 2018, the city of Saint-Prix (Val-d'Oise) has been doing everything possible to help them migrate safely, explains
La Gazette Val-d'Oise
on Monday.
With the help of Siare (intermunicipal sanitation union in the Enghien region), the ONF (National Forestry Office), the Aesef Association and the Cpcv, city officials and volunteers are installing a crapaudrome facing the Étangs Marie.
Safe crossing
It is a tarpaulin of more than 600 meters positioned along the road and which prevents toads, frogs, newts or salamanders from crossing.
Then, every morning, the volunteers come to help the animals, blocked by this tarpaulin, to cross the road.
The migration period can be disrupted by the weather, the device can remain installed until April or May.
In addition to asking motorists to be careful, the municipality is looking for volunteers to participate in this operation.
Those interested can send an email to environnement@saintprix.fr.
