The Hessian State Criminal Police Office (LKA) registers dozens of cases of poaching every year.

The motives and the approach are different, as the LKA announced.

Wild boar and red deer are mainly killed in order to get the meat illegally.

In individual cases, animals were also tortured or the perpetrators were after animal trophies.

In 2021 there were fewer cases of hunting poaching than in the previous year, exact figures are contained in the police crime statistics, which Hesse's Interior Minister Peter Beuth (CDU) wants to present this Wednesday.

Just over a week ago, two police officers were killed during a traffic check in Rhineland-Palatinate.

The public prosecutor assumes that the alleged perpetrators, who are in custody, murdered the young police officer and her colleague with headshots to cover up poaching.

The LKA appealed to hunters and other citizens to contact the police immediately if poaching is suspected and not to intervene themselves.

Under no circumstances should people put themselves in danger by carelessly addressing or provoking suspicious people, as they could have firearms with them, the LKA explained.

Venison of unknown or dubious origin should also not be bought.

"In cases of poaching, the police work very well together with the hunters and the specialist authorities and institutions," it said.

Based on the number of cases, no clear development can be identified in the years 2017 to 2020.

According to the LKA, a total of 56 cases of hunting poaching were counted in Hesse in 2017, 50 cases the following year, 59 cases in 2019 and a total of 75 cases in 2020.

In addition to hunting poaching, fish poaching cases are also registered.

A total of 150 cases were counted here in 2020, in 2017 there were still 100 cases.

The LKA explained that there was also a decline in fish poaching in the past year compared to the previous year.
