We want to live in
greener,
more sustainable, cleaner and, ultimately,
more humane
cities .
To win the battle against fumes, there is no other choice but to make commuting on foot or by bicycle easier and safer for everyone every day.
So far consensus does not usually fail.
So what is missing?
The authorities of
Copenhagen
, the most
bike-friendly
city in the world, have it clear.
If 49% of its citizens cycle to work or school every day, it is not "part of the DNA of the Danes".
Rather, it is "the result of three important factors: "infrastructure, infrastructure, and infrastructure."
In Spain, the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) has just published its latest study on the functionality of the cycling infrastructures of 14 cities, the eight most populated and another six that have stood out for the boost they are giving to cycling.
According to this,
Vitoria, Seville, Valencia and Barcelona
would occupy the top positions in the ranking.
victory, number one
The capital of Alava has risen from fourth
to first place
compared to the same study that was carried out eight years ago.
And it stands out especially for the denseness of its network: it provides service
to all areas of the city,
covering both the center and the most populated outlying areas.
Second place goes to
Seville
, which, although it drops one position, maintains excellent ratings in aspects such as uniformity and
connection between the different sections
.
Valencia
is another city that has improved a lot in recent years, rising from sixth to third position.
In his case, the most remarkable aspect is
the design of its tracks,
continuous and well signposted.
Barcelona completes this poker city of cycling cities, with a generous network that runs largely along the main roads in the most direct way possible.
Useful and secure networks
According to the OCU, for a bicycle network to be useful and safe, it must meet seven criteria: it must be complete, continuous, uniform, direct, recognizable, dense and pass through main roads.
Although the results
have generally improved compared
to those of the previous study carried out in 2013, only five cities (Vitoria, Valencia, Seville, Barcelona and San Sebastián)
get a good or very good rating.
By bike through Seville.
This means that they have achieved networks that connect peripheral areas with the center and allow direct access to points of greatest interest.
Madrid, in the queue
At the other extreme, the worst results are again for Madrid, the only one among the large cities that does not pass any of the seven criteria analysed.
In the case of the capital of Spain, OCU also regrets the use of the cycle lane, which is nothing more than
a bicycle painted on the road
with a 30 km/h sign, which leaves cyclists at the mercy of cars.
For the consumer advocate, this type of cycle path "disincentivizes the use of bicycles and is often used to camouflage the absence of a specific infrastructure of exclusive and protected bike lanes."
In the ranking,
Málaga and Bilbao
have obtained a poor rating, while La Coruña, Córdoba and Madrid have a very poor rating.
In general, they lack connectivity and some seem designed to walk more than to use the bike as a means of transport.
rental bikes
Another of the factors that have been valued in the report is the excellence of urban bicycle rental systems.
Seville and Valencia
are the cities with the
most rental points
per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Barcelona and San Sebastián.
Madrid has fewer rental points, but instead, the OCU highlights that the bicycles are
electric.
