The Vall d'Hebron Hospital in Barcelona has performed

three lung transplants on the same person for the first time in Spain

, the center's head of Thoracic Surgery and Lung Transplantation, Alberto Jáuregui, explained this Friday to Europa Press.

Jáuregui has specified that the recipient is a

24-year-old woman who suffers from cystic fibrosis

, a genetic disease that affects the lungs, the digestive system and other organs of the body and that it manifested itself in her first months of life.

As a result of the cystic fibrosis that she suffered as a disease of origin, the patient received a

first double-lung transplant in 2016

after presenting a pneumothorax as a complication.

In 2019 the patient presented chronic rejection of the organs, for which she required a second transplant of both lungs as it is the only treatment currently available, explains the doctor.

Recently, the hospital has performed a third double-lung transplant on him, since he

has again presented rejection of the lungs from the second transplant

, and Jáuregui has highlighted that it is a "very exceptional situation".
