Behind this process, scientists have left baffling questions, such as the speed of cooling and when this process will end, and the resulting environmental repercussions, which may turn the Earth into a planet without life, as is the case with Mars, for example.

In a new study, the results of which were published in the journal "Earth and Planetary Science Letters", scientists in the laboratory tried to find out how the materials that make those boundaries conduct heat, to find out what could happen inside our planet.

Scientists studied the mineral "bridmagnet", which makes up most of that layer, and were shocked to discover that it is actually more conductive than they thought, indicating that heat is likely to flow from the Earth's core more quickly as well.

"This measurement system allows us to show that the thermal conductivity of predmagnet is about 1.5 times higher than assumed," Motohiko Murakami, one of the study's authors and professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, told The Independent.

"If the Earth were to cool down more quickly, the different effects of this process would also change. For example, the movement of tectonic plates could slow down, also faster than expected," Murakami added.

He continued, "This process could accelerate even faster in the future. When predmagnet cools, it turns into a more conductive material, and thus cools and becomes inactive much faster, following in the footsteps of rocky planets such as Mercury and Mars."
