One of them kills 100 people..a warning of a poisonous fish invading the coasts of Algeria

The Algerian authorities in the state of El Tarf in Algeria have warned citizens of highly toxic fish, after they appeared near some of the state's coasts.

An-Nahar newspaper quoted the Directorate of Maritime Fishing and Aquaculture in El Tarf State that the appearance of the poisonous rabbit fish is of great danger.

According to the newspaper, this type of fish was found during a sea fishing a few days ago;

Noting that the necessary measures were taken to educate and inform fishermen and consumers of its danger, and the Directorate of Maritime Fisheries in the Wilayat of El Tarf asked the owners of fishing vessels to report when catching this type of dangerous fish.

Health experts say that one fish of this species contains enough poison to kill 100 people when eaten, and in the event that the poisonous glands are not removed from it very carefully.

They explained that the poison of that fish is of a type (tetradotoxin), which is concentrated in three different places on its body: (under the skin, near the viscera, and next to the marrow), and that the liver of this fish is very toxic.

They pointed out that toxic substances also accumulate in the fish's teeth due to the decomposition of its food, which includes a type of toxic green algae.

And the Al-Hurra website quoted in the newspaper "The Guardian", that the poisonous rabbit fish came from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean after the opening of the Suez Canal in the year 1869, and made its way to the Greek waters by 1964.

In recent years, rabbit fish have begun to breed in the waters around the island of Linosa in Italy;

Where plants devour underwater.

Climate scenarios show that the western Mediterranean will become increasingly habitable for tropical fish, as well as the southern coast of the Adriatic and the southwestern Italian coast.

Such calls had been repeated in the past years;

In 2014, for example, the Ministry of Maritime Fisheries warned of the spread of poisonous rabbit fish across the entire Algerian coastal strip.

Media reports indicated at the time that there was a state of panic among local fishermen, after the Consumer Federation confirmed the entry of samples of this fish to the market;

because of the ignorance of its nature on the part of the novice fishermen;

This prompted the Ministry of Agriculture to strengthen veterinary control in ports.
