• The contagiousness of Omicron makes the use of FFP2 masks even more relevant.

  • The Nord department had a stock of nearly 2 million of this type of mask since 2020.

  • These protections will be distributed in particular in the municipalities and colleges.

For ordinary mortals, FFP2 masks are hardly common. Because this type of mask is more expensive, or even impossible to find at the start of the epidemic, the vast majority of French people have fallen back on the famous pleated surgical masks for many months. Except that the extreme contagiousness of the Omicron variant has revived the interest of wearing FFP2. Thus, the Nord departmental council has decided to destock nearly 2 million of these masks to give them to the inhabitants.

It is a war chest of 1.7 million FFP2 masks which has been sleeping in the cellars of the departmental council since 2020. And this Monday, the president of the institution, Christian Poiret, decided that these masks would be more useful on the faces of its constituents only in boxes. "In order to contribute to the containment of the Omicron variant of Covid-19, we have decided, with my colleagues, to distribute our entire stock of FFP2 masks", declared Christian Poiret.

As there will not be enough for everyone, the population of the North being more than 2.5 million inhabitants, the departmental council will proceed by priorities starting with the colleges, which will receive a total of 330,000 masks, i.e. approximately 1,000 per establishment.

The 2,500 family assistants will receive a batch of 100 FFP2 each.

The bulk of the stock (1 million) will be distributed among the 648 municipalities of the department and the distribution will be left to their discretion.

The departmental advisers will distribute 82,000 masks in their cantons to the "most exposed structures".
