The disappearance of bees..a mystery raises concern in Morocco

The recent disappearance of bee colonies in Morocco raises increasing concern, both among breeders and specialists in this field, in an unprecedented phenomenon that will negatively affect the chain of beekeeping and honey production in the Kingdom.

According to a report by "Sax News", the diagnosis made by the National Syndicate of Beekeeping Professionals showed several symptoms related to this new phenomenon, including the beehive incubating the queen and only a few bees, and the total disappearance of workers who specialize in all tasks inside and outside the hive.

The results of preliminary tests carried out by the National Office of Health Safety, known for its acronym "UNSA", ruled out the hypothesis that a disease affecting bees was the reason for its disappearance.

A number of beekeepers in Morocco expressed their fears of the continued disappearance of their sects, and the subsequent repercussions on honey production, and demanded the need to expedite the search for ways to reduce the impact of this on the beekeeping chain in the Kingdom, which is a source of income for more than 36,000 people, according to figures official

Abdallah Ajjal, head of one of the beekeeping and honey production cooperatives, says that he has never, over his 30 years of work in this field, experienced such a strange phenomenon, which has caused massive material damage to a number of beekeepers in different regions of Morocco.

The spokesperson, whose cooperative includes more than 4,000 hives, stresses that the continued disappearance of bee colonies will greatly affect the production of natural honey during the next season, which begins in the month of April.

On the other hand, Malika Edmin, the agricultural advisor at the National Center for Agricultural Consultation, points out that the consequences of this new phenomenon will not be limited to the rapid production of honey only, but will extend to include the natural pollination system for plants, which may seriously reflect on the quantity and quality of production of plants and trees. fruitful;

The veterinary services of the National Office of Health Safety (UNSA) conducted field visits to about 23,000 beehives in various regions of the Kingdom, to search for the causes that led to the disappearance of bee colonies.

Onsa confirmed that the preliminary results of the field visits concluded that "the disappearance of bees is a new phenomenon that includes some regions to varying degrees."

The office added that the results of laboratory analyzes conducted on bee hives and brood, have ruled out that a specific disease is behind the disappearance of bees in some areas.

Onsa explained that this phenomenon has also been recorded in other countries in Europe, America and Africa, where its emergence is linked to the presence of multiple and overlapping causes between what is related to climatic conditions such as lack of rain, and environmental conditions such as lack of grazing, in addition to conditions related to the health status of beehives and the preventive methods used.
