Saudi Arabia records unprecedentedly low temperatures

On Friday, Saudi cities are witnessing a sharp drop in temperatures unprecedented in years, while snow covers six cities in the north of the Kingdom, and the temperature in some of them has reached three degrees below zero.

The cold will intensify during the weekend, with the capital, Riyadh, expected to record three degrees below zero, according to the National Center of Meteorology.

Saudi Arabia is known as one of the hottest countries in the world, but its northern regions are usually exposed to severe cold waves during the winter season.

Arctic air masses from Siberia currently affect large areas of the desert kingdom.

Hussain Al-Qahtani, spokesman for the Meteorological Center, said Thursday that Saudi Arabia will witness a "sharp drop in temperatures at the end of the week in the northern and central regions... It is expected that Riyadh will record between one and three degrees below zero."

The city of Turaif in the north at the border with Jordan recorded on Friday three degrees below zero, and the city of Qurayyat on the border with Jordan two degrees below zero, as well as the case in Hail in the north of the Kingdom.

And the lowest temperature recorded in the Kingdom was seven degrees below zero, according to a spokesman for the Government Meteorological Authority, in statements in 2020, without indicating the date of this occurrence.
