To each baby his tree!
Well almost… Next Wednesday, Wissembourg, in the north of Bas-Rhin near the German border, will inaugurate a “garden of births”.
“The idea came from a local arborist association.
It provided for one plantation per child, ”recounts for
the 6th deputy mayor, Lorène Knittel.
“We were interested, but we are in an average city, where there are around 60 births a year.
It was a bit too much…”
After reflection, the project was therefore reviewed and adapted. Depending on the space available but also on the additional burden imposed on the agents of the municipality. “We have opted for 5 trees and 5 shrubs per year, which corresponds to approximately one plantation for 6 children”, continues the elected official. “In terms of upkeep, it's already not bad, especially since we have chosen fruit trees. »
On Wednesday, cherry trees, mirabelle plums, apple trees, pear trees, as well as blueberries and raspberries will be planted.
On a plot on Boulevard de l'Europe, a place that is now "little frequented".
“It's a bit out of the center but we hope it will become a place for walking.
For the moment, we have not planned a specific path.
“Only an arch will mark the entrance, with labels and the year of birth of the children they embody.
“We have room for at least five years and if there is a peak in births, we can adapt,” promises Lorène Knittel.
