• Valneva is a Franco-Austrian group whose premises are in the Nantes suburbs.

  • "VLA2001" may be available in the spring.

  • This vaccine against Covid-19 would then be the first produced by a French laboratory.

Highly anticipated by part of the unvaccinated population, the future vaccine produced by the Franco-Austrian laboratory Valneva would be effective against Delta variants and, above all, Omicron, deemed extremely contagious, announces the company based in Saint-Herblain, near Nantes. .

A preliminary study was indeed carried out on 30 participants vaccinated with three doses of "VLA2001", the serum developed by Valneva.

All of the 30 samples “presented neutralizing antibodies against the historic virus and the Delta variant and 26 samples (87%) against the Omicron variant”, welcomes the Nantes laboratory.

Deliveries in April?

"We are very pleased with these results which confirm the potential for broadening protection with our vaccine as well as its ability to attack the variants of concern currently in circulation", reacts Juan Carlos Jaramillo

,

Chief Medical Officer of Valneva.

"We continue to believe that VLA2001 could become an important part of the fight against Covid-19 and we remain committed to getting VLA2001 to those who need it as quickly as possible," he added.

Unlike the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, Valneva's vaccine does not work with the famous messenger RNA but with inactivated particles of the virus combined with two adjuvants, a well-known technology likely to reassure some skeptics about vaccination.

Valneva has signed a contract for 60 million doses with the European Commission.

The first deliveries are expected for April, subject to authorization by the European Medicines Agency (EMA).

It would then be the first French vaccine put on the market.

The French laboratories Sanofi and Ose Immunotherapeutics are also working on the development of a vaccine against Covid-19.

In parallel, Valneva, which employs 700 people in Europe, is also trying to develop vaccines against Lyme disease and chikungunya.
