The project is still evolving “following the various studies”.

The service of the Paillon valley by tram, in 2028 from Nice, after initially considering a high-level bus service (BHLS) and then a "tram-train", could finally be done exclusively on the surface.

While presenting a “partly underground” route in March 2021 on the last 1.5 km stretch, between La Trinité and Drap, Christian Estrosi unveiled this Thursday a new version of this future line 5 where a tunnel of 600 m would only be optional.

“For this third phase of the construction site, which is more technically complex, two routes are proposed for public consultation”, scheduled from January 28 to March 11, explained the president of the metropolis.

After an overhead section of 800 m, the community proposes either a 600 m underground, which would pass under the Drap roads, or an outdoor platform, which would run along the penetrating Paillon for 550 m.

Sixteen stations and a route completed in twenty-five minutes

For the rest, the course seems well defined, for a budget exceeding 300 million euros.

Over a total of 7.6 kilometers, line 5 should start from the Palais des Expositions in Nice.

It would run on the left bank of the Paillon as far as the "twin bridges", at the level of the Bindweed district, and then branch off on the other side.

The tracks would then run along the Ariane district before crossing the river again on the Anatole-France bridge.

They will finally meander in the direction of Drap where the two options are being studied.

The project would allow gradual commissioning between 2026 and 2028. And, in total, sixteen stations would be served, with a departure every eight minutes and an average speed of 20 km/h.

Either a course completed in twenty-five minutes, against fifteen minutes by car.

Precisely, with this tram line, the Nice Côte d'Azur metropolis plans to eliminate 15,000 vehicles every day on the roads concerned, according to a presentation video.

And even 18,000, according to Christian Estrosi.

“It's 2,000 tonnes of CO2 avoided per year, also assured the mayor of Nice.

That is to say a reduction of 20% to 25% of daily road traffic, which will relieve congestion on this major axis of traffic "and regularly bottled up at rush hour.
