  • Saturated Nurse 'Mixed but not shaken', this is how the third doses are in Spain

Years ago, while on duty at the Emergency Department of the Hospital Xeral de Lugo, a patient who could barely walk arrived at dawn.

After observing him briefly and listening to his story, I told him that everything pointed to the fact that he was suffering from

renal colic

.

I still remember his answer: "it must be that, because I'm quite frantic, yes".

And the fact is that if all colic is painful in itself, those of the kidney are especially so and they all end up with the person who suffers them in the Emergency Room in search of a good

intravenous painkiller.

If you want to know everything about this annoying disease, I invite you to continue reading.

I don't guarantee you immunity from them, but at least you'll get to know them a little better.

Are they very frequent?

Quite.

It is a health problem that affects, only in our country,

5% of the population

.

In addition, the attendance figures make us see that it is a pathology that is increasing year after year.

They affect men and women equally, and are much more common between 30 and 60 years of age.

Why do stones cause so much pain?

Actually the pain is not caused by having stones in the kidney, it is caused because they have moved.

We can have them for a long time and not even know about it.

Until one day they move and get

stuck in the ureter

, that is, the long, thin tube that connects the kidneys to the bladder and whose function is to transport urine.

When it gets stuck, the pressure increases and colic arrives.

What symptoms do they produce?

Kidney colic is something that does not go unnoticed.

The most characteristic symptom is a

sharp pain in the lower back

, in the waist or on one side of the abdomen.

This pain begins suddenly and generally increases in intensity as the hours go by, although it can be intermittent.

If the stone is very close to the bladder, in the final section of the ureter, the symptoms could be confused with those of a urine infection.

Does it only cause pain?

It is something that depends on each patient, but it is common that in addition to that characteristic pain, the patient also presents

nausea or vomiting, cold sweat, tachycardia or burning when urinating

.

Sometimes there may also be blood in the urine due to the small tears that the stone is causing in the internal part of the ureter.

How is the treatment?

The treatment will begin by

relieving the colic and trying to get the patient to expel the stone

, something that is achieved in most cases.

To do this, we will use analgesics and anti-inflammatories intravenously, and we will also place a serum to increase urine production and help expel the stone.

If this is not achieved because the stone is large, then other techniques such as shock waves or endoureteral laser should be used to fragment it and make its expulsion easier.

This technique is known as

lithotripsy.

Can they be prevented?

The appearance of kidney stones does not have a single cause, and there are even predisposing factors on which we can have little influence, among which is family inheritance.

Also the consumption of certain medications can favor its appearance.

But if there is something we can do to prevent them, it is to be properly hydrated and avoid leading a sedentary life.

Does food influence its appearance?

Of course.

Eating a

diet with excess animal protein

, eating large amounts of dairy products, and excessive salt intake are clear predisposing factors for the appearance of kidney stones.
