On January 15, local time, the underwater volcano on Hongahaapai Island in Tonga erupted violently.

Tonga Deputy Prime Minister Boasi Tai then declared a state of emergency.

According to satellite images released by Reuters, the island of Houhong Aha Apai has all but disappeared from the eruption, and the town is covered in thick ash.
