A five-year-old died in a serious skiing accident in the French Alps.

As the emergency services in the eastern French department of Haute-Savoie announced on Sunday, the child died on Saturday after being hit by a skier.

The girl succumbed to her serious injuries in the rescue helicopter. 

As the AFP news agency learned from the European Ski Federation (ESF), the accident happened while the child was attending a course at a French ski school.

The skier, who is himself a member of the volunteer fire brigade, provided first aid after the accident, the regional daily newspaper "Le Dauphine Libéré" reported. The Bonneville district police took over the investigation. The fire brigade was also on duty.

Skier seriously injured on Zugspitze

A skier suffered serious injuries during a descent on the Zugspitze.

According to the police on Sunday, it was initially unclear why the 30-year-old from North Rhine-Westphalia fell.

Another skier discovered the woman lying behind a crest on Saturday in the area of ​​the Wetterwandeck summit with serious injuries.

The 30-year-old, who wore a helmet on the descent near Germany's highest mountain, was taken to a hospital by rescue helicopter.

The police said she was being treated there with the most serious injuries after there had been talk of a fatal skiing accident.
