The man taken into custody in connection with a mysterious quadruple murder in the French Alps is free again.

As the public prosecutor in Annecy announced on Thursday, his alleged involvement in the 2012 case could be ruled out.

The detention announced on Wednesday had fueled the hope that the crime was about to be clarified.

In September 2012, Iraqi Briton Saad al-Hillie, his wife Ikbal and his mother-in-law were killed.

The victims had each been found with multiple shots in the head in their car on a country road near Annecy.

The couple's two young daughters survived the attack, one of whom was seriously injured.

A cyclist from the region, presumably passing by by accident, was also shot.

The brutal murders made international headlines.

The background to the crime has not yet been clarified.

The investigators suspected inheritance disputes or industrial espionage as the motive.

To this day, they have not been able to identify the culprit.
