Indonesia .. 100 lashes for a woman accused of adultery and 15 for her partner

An Indonesian woman was flogged 100 times in Aceh for adultery, while her partner, who denied the charges, received only 15 lashes.

Evan Najjar Alawi, head of the public investigation department of the East Aceh Prosecution Office, said the court issued a harsher sentence to the woman after she admitted to investigators that she had had sex outside of her marriage, noting that judges found it difficult to convict the man, who was then the head of the East Aceh Fishing Agency. And he was also married, because he denied committing any criminal act.

After carrying out the public flogging sentence, Alawi noted that "during the trial, the accused did not confess anything, denying all the accusations, and therefore, the judges were not able to ascertain whether he was guilty."

According to Russia Today, judges found the married man guilty of "showing affection to a partner who is not his wife" after the couple were arrested on a palm oil plantation in 2018.

He was initially sentenced to 30 lashes, but his appeal to the Aceh High Sharia Court was successful, and the sentence was reduced to 15 lashes.

The woman's flogging was stopped for a short time because she could not stand the pain, and then the execution of her sentence was completed.

Banda Aceh is the only province that applies Islamic law in Indonesia, which gained autonomy in 2001.
