After a massive death of fish in a lagoon off Rügen, helpers collected around 31 tons of dead animals.

This was announced by the Mecklenburg-Western Pomeranian Ministry of Agriculture on Friday in Schwerin after the clearing operation had been completed.

The cause of the fish die-off in the Kleinen Jasmunder Bodden, a separate edge of the Baltic Sea, was therefore still unclear.

Further scientific analyzes of water samples were in progress.

The body of water will continue to be closely monitored by the authorities in the coming days and weeks, the ministry said.

Should the fish kill continue, carcasses would be cleared again.

As long as the cause is not clear, no fish from the Bodden should be eaten.

People should also keep pets away from carcasses as a precaution.

The fish kill had started last week.

More than 70 helpers from various authorities, the Federal Agency for Technical Relief and the Anglers' Association took part in clearing the carcasses on the banks.

According to the ministry, the dead fish were disposed of in a rendering plant.
