La Lectura
magazine
has decided to
turn its cover into a support for works by great artists
.
An initiative launched by the Italian newspaper
Il Corriere della Sera
in its cultural supplement,
La Lettura
, and curated by the artist
Gianluigi Colin
.
How did you come up with the idea of leaving the cover in the hands of an artist?
Theodor Adorno recalled that the task of art is to introduce order into chaos. Thus, we wanted to introduce into the always well-organized information system an unexpected, somewhat surprising, perhaps even chaotic vision: that of the artists. It seemed important to me to establish a closer relationship between the newspaper and the art world. Art, as an account of the present, as a more faithful testimony of what we could define the spirit of our time. In 2011, the then director of the
Corriere della Sera
, Ferruccio de Bortoli, wanted to create a cultural supplement that would help us understand the complexity of our present. As an artist, as well as a journalist, I proposed to him to make a cover that featured the work of an artist each week. The intention has been from the beginning to bring art, the "culture of creation", to all homes, even those who do not usually frequent galleries and museums. The real project, therefore, was to consider the cover of
La Lettura
as a simple and at the same time sophisticated tool for disseminating the languages of communication.
Only the work is on the cover. There is no allusion to the content of the magazine, there are no headlines. It was a risky gamble.
It was certainly a challenge. And a winning bet. The artist's cover is a powerful, unique and recognizable message in its own way. Above all, it is a hallmark. A kind of statement about the visionary power of culture. That cover can give us much more information than we can imagine. Open our gaze and our curiosity to the power and poetry of creation. And readers have understood.
How many artists have walked on the covers of 'La Lettura'?
We carry 530 covers by as many artists.
They are painters, sculptors, photographers, directors, architects, designers, even chefs, stylists, and writers.
The interesting thing about this adventure lies in the transversal dimension, and also democratic.
Some artists are internationally renowned, while others are young beginners: in the first issue we published the self-portrait of prisoner Ai Weiwei.
The number 200 has the work of Jannis Kounellis with the inscription
W freedom.
W Géricault
.
Two symbolic works that convey the same powerful and universal message: culture is freedom.
Recently an Italian artist told me that the set of the covers of
La Lettura
they will be a very useful day to understand the history and feelings of these first years of the 21st century.
Is it difficult to convince the artists?
We have found great support in this adventure, also because we only ask to be able to reproduce the works.
For any artist, even the most successful, getting their work published on the cover of a magazine is an exceptional outreach tool.
The cover of
La Lettura
del
Corriere della Sera
and now
La Lectura
de EL MUNDO represent an extraordinary gallery to collect the voices of the world.
