It is difficult to breathe in Marseille and in the region.

A fine particle pollution alert was issued for Friday in Bouches-du-Rhône and Var, Atmosud, an organization that monitors air quality, announced Thursday.

"With winter, the use of domestic heating is on the rise, and since the beginning of the week, the high pressure weather conditions favor the accumulation of fine particles", explained the prefecture of Var in a press release.

The Bouches-du-Rhône and the Var, placed Thursday in the information-recommendation procedure (i.e. vigilance for sensitive people), will reach the alert level of level 1 on Friday (i.e. vigilance for the general public).

"The levels of particles are increasing in the east of Bouches-du-Rhône and Toulon," said the prefecture of Bouches-du-Rhône.

Intense physical activities are not recommended

The authorities advise to avoid intense physical or sports activities (which require breathing through the mouth) and to control the heating in buildings.

They also call for prioritizing carpooling, public transport or non-polluting modes of travel.

For vulnerable or sensitive populations, they suggest giving priority to short outings requiring as little effort as possible, preferably in the morning or evening, and avoiding travel on major highways and their surroundings during peak periods.
