Botswana sells permits to amateurs to hunt 300 elephants

Botswana plans to issue permits to hunt 294 elephants during the opening of this year's hunting season in April.

Kapilo Senyatsu, the national park manager responsible for issuing the permits, said the permits will be sold to safari companies operating in the country, who in turn make them available to international sport hunting enthusiasts.

The next hunting season in Botswana runs from the 3rd of April to the 13th of September.

Last December, Botswana issued permits to hunt 83 elephants.

Proceeds from the sale of permits are allocated to animal welfare.

And the Republic of Botswana, which is located south of the Sahara in southern Africa, Botswana has one of the largest groups of elephants in the world.

Its decision to lift the ban on elephant hunting in 2019 sparked global outrage among animal rights activists.

While activists question the benefits of killing elephants, hunters defend it, citing the benefits for local people.

According to the German Hunting Association, the density of elephants per square kilometer in Botswana is 1.2, and the elephants share water and land with the farming population.
