Pandemic The WHO rules out that in 2022 the Covid will be treated as a flu
In order to clear up doubts about how many days it takes for the protective immunological memory to be generated after completing the two-dose vaccination schedule, a team of researchers from the Gregorio Marañón Hospital in Madrid has studied the immune response to the vaccine (both from Pfizer / Biontech as from Moderna) in volunteers from the hospital itself, measuring the cellular response at three, seven and fourteen days after vaccination.
This is how those responsible for this work have been able to verify that
the maximum level of protection with the Pfizer / Biontech vaccine is reached seven days after receiving the second dose
. As for Moderna's injectable, the level of cellular response generated is higher than that produced by Pfizer's, but the maximum level of protection is not reached until 14 days after completing the vaccination regimen. Such conclusions have been published in the journal 'Frontiers Immunology'.
According to one of the researchers involved in this work, Rafael Correa, "we still do not know what is the cellular response value from which a vaccinated individual is completely protected from infection. But these results push us to make the population aware of the fact that having received only the first dose of these vaccines is probably not sufficient to confer protection, and that even after receiving the second dose there is a window of 1-2 weeks where the level of protection has not yet reached its maximum.
we must continue to take extreme precautions, especially in recently vaccinated people
or they have not completed the entire guideline.
In addition, it should not be forgotten that these vaccines drastically reduce the risk of suffering from the disease and developing severe symptoms, saving many lives.
However, they do not guarantee 100% that we cannot become infected and transmit the virus to other unvaccinated or at higher risk people, so the mask and the usual precautions remain the most effective measure to prevent the spread of the disease. "
Correa is not the only author of the article, there are also Marjorie Pion, Sergio Gil and Diego Carbonell, from the Health Research Institute of the Gregorio Marañón Hospital.
As they argue, one of the lines of study in the international arena focuses on
knowing the evolution of the immunity induced thanks to the vaccine
.
It is expected that the intense response elicited at the time of vaccination will diminish over time, but "we do not yet know if the immunological memory values that persist are sufficient or not to prolong long-term protection."
For this reason, the level of cellular response must be maintained to confer protective immunity and to prevent the spread of the pandemic is being studied.
Pending these studies, "the administration of a third dose in any case increases the level of immunological memory, and will reinforce the protection against the development of Covid-19, especially in those most vulnerable or more exposed to the infection" .
