Since the start of the pandemic, the very "animalophile" Ireland has warned about the dangers of adopting an animal in times of confinement, because of the risks of trafficking and especially of abandonment during the return to normal, going so far as to launch police operations on puppy traffickers.

But the island is also facing a sad phenomenon: never have so many donkeys been mistreated.

There are believed to be between 5,000 and 10,000 donkeys on the island, descending from a legacy of Ireland's agricultural and rural tradition.
