Covid-19 patients continue to flow into hospitals, which have more than 22,000 patients, including nearly 4,000 in critical care, according to figures released Monday by Public Health France.
French hospitals currently accommodate 22,749 patients with the coronavirus (against 21,982 on Sunday), of which 2,543 were admitted in 24 hours.
A week ago, around 19,600 Covid-19 patients were hospitalized.
Increase in the number of patients in critical care
The number of patients also continues to increase in critical care, which treat the most serious cases including intensive care, with 3,904 patients (3,847 the day before), including 380 new admissions.
This closely watched indicator has continued to improve since the start of the fifth wave of the Covid-19 epidemic in France, in November 2021.
In 24 hours, 281 people were killed by the disease, bringing the total number of deaths to 125,718 since the start of the epidemic.
The number of contaminations stands at 93,896, a figure that is insignificant at the end of the weekends because fewer people are being tested.
But by calculating the average of daily cases over the last seven days, which smooths the gaps, this figure reaches 268,185, against 167,338 a week ago.
The infections have increased dramatically under the pressure of the variant Omicron, which is extremely contagious.
Shorter hospital stays with the Omicron variant
But it turns out to be less dangerous than the previous variants of the virus and Covid patients infected by Omicron stay in hospital for a shorter time than patients infected with Delta, said the Minister of Health Olivier Véran, Monday in front of the senators.
These patients are also sent to intensive care less, as shown by the latest data from the Assistance Publique-Hôpital de Paris (AP-HP) published on Monday.
The AP-HP data concerns 3,112 patients: 491 patients hospitalized in critical care and 2,621 patients treated in conventional hospitalization.
Between December 1 and January 4, these figures “show a clear increase in the proportion of patients infected with the Omicron variant in conventional hospitalization and until the beginning of January a stability in the proportion of patients infected with Omicron, who remain in the very minority. in critical care, ”according to the AP-HP.
Regarding vaccination, 53.3 million people have received at least one injection (79.1% of the total population) and more than 52 million are fully vaccinated (77.2% of the population).
And nearly 29 million people have received a booster dose.
