Go viral in 2019, the selfie of a Congolese ranger and two gorillas obscured a sad reality: The Virunga National Park - in the Democratic Republic of the Congo -, where the scene was captured, is one of the most dangerous in the world .

For decades, mountain gorillas have been victims of poaching, deforestation, disease and fighting there (rebel groups and militias still control large parts of the territory).

The picture is no better for the staff who officiate there since 175 rangers have died defending the Virunga over the past twenty years.

A natural site coveted by industries

The park director confirms the fragility of the Virunga situation: “There are serious threats to the park.

There is the situation of armed conflict, the pressure of several industries - especially oil - but also agricultural expansion, mining and others… ”.

Find out how rangers and institutions are fighting to preserve this biodiversity paradise in this video from our partner Brut.
