Sidney Poitier, a two-time Oscar-winning American actor known for
Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?
and In the heat of the night
he has died at the age of 94.
Potier was born in Miami to a farming family on Cat Island in the Bahamas. He was poor on his island and poor in the United States, the country he returned to at the age of 14, where he worked as a construction laborer. When he was old enough, he enlisted in the US Army to fight in World War II. He returned home in one piece and went to New York to pursue acting, first on the theater circuits by and for African Americans and later on Broadway, where he made his debut in a
Lisistrata
. That was the path that led him to the movies. Joseph L. Mankiewicz gave him his first role in
Hate is Blind
(1950), the film that gave birth to the
classic character
de Poitier: a gentleman of good appearance and very polite manners who broke with the clichés attributed to African Americans.
