• The current building of the National Theater of Nice must be destroyed in the spring.

  • Its director Muriel Mayette-Holtz provides an update on the upcoming program and the other rooms that will replace it from this year until 2025.

The curtain will definitely fall on the stage of the Pierre Brasseur room on Saturday afternoon, after the performances of

Bruit des loups

.

“A show with magic.

It's good to end like that, ”breathes Muriel Mayette-Holtz.

The director of the National Theater of Nice (TNN) is preparing, with her teams, to leave the premises, doomed to be demolished by the town hall of Nice for the continuation of the Paillon promenade.

The manager takes stock with

20 Minutes

on the organization of the coming months, with the arrival of new rooms.

The plan to destroy the TNN is still contested by some.

What is your opinion on the subject?

I don't want to get into that debate.

I can just tell you that it is not an easy instrument, even if it has the charm and soul of all theaters.

But, quite frankly, in the life of an artist, to open three rooms in one year is insane.

It may also be an opportunity for all of us to reinvent ourselves.

A National Dramatic Center [CDN] is a project, an identity.

It's not just walls.

How will things be in the coming weeks?

First there will be a travel time. We are going to take over the other theaters in town before we can launch our own. We will be at the opera, at the Diacosmie, at the Nice Nord forum and in the Francis-Gag and Lino-Ventura theaters. Then, on April 26, we will inaugurate our small definitive large room at the Franciscans [up to 400 seats] with

Darwin's Smile,

which I am directing with Isabella Rosselini. The Kitchen, our second large room [600 seats], which will be provisional pending the one we will have at the exhibition center in 2025, will be open from May 20 next to the Nikaia palace. We will present

Bérénice

. Finally, in January 2023, the 500-seat hall of the Iconic complex will be launched.

In the immediate future, you will therefore no longer have a theater with 1,000 seats.

Isn't that disabling?

The new rooms have other advantages.

At the Franciscans, we will have a much larger plateau.

In the kitchen, we will have one 20 m long and seats with excellent visibility.

Do you hope to expand the audience?

Being in all these places is obviously a unique opportunity to seduce those who never came and who do not know us.

It's a great challenge as the Covid-19 crisis has upset the relationship with culture.

How to bring culture and conferences to life, without the TNN or Acropolis?

Moving and protest

TNN employees will have to leave the premises to settle in the former Franciscan church in Old Nice on March 15.

The demolition of the site is then scheduled until the end of the year, specifies the municipality while protesters are still mobilized against this project to 75.6 million euros.

In mid-December, a petition launched by former PS municipal councilor Patrick Allemand had collected 4,000 signatures.

Eric Ciotti has also launched a support committee for the preservation of the site.
