Pfizer is working to develop a vaccine against zoonosis

The American laboratories Pfizer and Germany's Piontech, which developed one of the main vaccines against Covid-19, announced on Wednesday a new cooperation to develop a vaccine based on messenger RNA technology against the "Zona" infection known as the Ring of Fire.

The agreement relates to research, development and commercial marketing of the vaccine, according to a statement by the two companies specifying that clinical trials should begin in the second half of 2022.

"Adults over the age of 50 as well as vulnerable population groups such as cancer patients are at greater risk of developing zoonosis," said Ugur Sahin, president of Biontech, as saying. "Our goal is to develop an mRNA vaccine that is safe and highly effective."

Ring of fire is caused by the reactivation of the chickenpox virus and often appears in adults over the age of 50.

After infection with chickenpox, the virus remains dormant in human nerve cells and can become active at a later stage due to a causative factor such as stress or weak immunity.

Usually, this local infection is not dangerous, but it leads to severe pain in the patient.

Although there are currently approved vaccines against the Ring of Fire, the two laboratories believe that an improved and more effective vaccine could be developed using mRNA technology and could be better tolerated.
