Every day, newborns are born in hospitals across the country.

After they are born, the doctor will put red ink on the soles of their feet, and then make a small "barefoot print" on a piece of paper. This is the imprint of their identity when they were born and the first time they came into this world. As evidence of identity, many parents will keep these vague barefoot prints as a souvenir.

For the 13-year-old Li Shengnan (pseudonym), the vague barefoot print is not only a memorial, but also opens a new life for her. Without this barefoot print, she might have become a "black house."

Li Shengnan is the second child in the family, born in 2006.

Li's father and mother, who are originally from Anhui, originally hoped that the second child could have a boy, but because the second child had a girl, the two planned to have a third child.

Therefore, when issuing the birth medical certificate at the hospital, the two lied about their names as Wang Liang and Wang Xiaonan, and named Li Shengnan as Wang Wei.

Time has changed. Looking at the two well-behaved and sensible daughters, Li's father and mother gave up their plans to have three children, and reported to "Wang Wei" under the name "Li Shengnan" in their hometown, and named "Shengnan", hoping that she would be like a boy. He is equally promising, even better than boys.

In 2019, Li Shengnan is already a 13-year-old girl.

In order for her to receive a better education, Li's father and Li's mother wanted to transfer her household registration to Shanghai.

However, due to a discrepancy at the time, the information on the parents and the baby girl on the birth medical certificate did not match the household registration information registered by the public security organs. For a while, it was difficult for Xiaosheng to settle down and go to school.

Mom and Dad Li did not expect that the confusion caused so much trouble that year. The couple complained to each other, and family conflicts escalated frequently.

  The problem must be solved.

Father and mother Li found the hospital and wanted to issue a new birth certificate for his daughter to prove that Li Shengnan was the "Wang Wei" at the time.

However, according to the regulations, if you want to reissue the birth certificate, you must prove that "Wang Liang" was Li Dad, "Wang Xiaonan" was Li Ma, and "Wang Wei" was Li Shengnan.

According to the requirements of the hospital, Li Shengnan and Li Ma must first do a DNA paternity test.

Originally thought that the problem was solved in this way, but the hospital also required it to prove that the red fingerprints on the newborn's birth records belonged to Li's mother and the barefoot prints belonged to Li Shengnan.

This has become a big problem.

Thirteen years have passed, and the original fingerprints and barefoot prints have faded, leaving only a few dots, making identification extremely difficult.

So they sought help from the Academy of Forensic Forensic Sciences (hereinafter referred to as the Department of Appraisal).

Ye Ruiren, an engineer from the Criminal Technology Research Office of the Sijianyuan, was in charge of the case.

Since the child was anxious to settle down in school, the identification time was very short.

Ye Ruiren first did a fingerprint identification for Li Ma. Although the original fingerprints were blurred, the lines were still clearly visible. The problem is that with age, Li Ma’s original fingerprints have added some wrinkles and scars. How to put aside these traces and interference It is the key to Li Ma's fingerprint identification.

Eyesight is the test of fingerprint identification!

Through careful observation and comparison with a magnifying glass and a stereo microscope, Ye Ruiren found eight stable features that are the same as the old and new fingerprints. According to technical specifications, it can be confirmed that the right thumb fingerprint on the newborn's birth record belongs to Ma Li.

But the comparison of newborn barefoot prints is not so easy.

“The hospital’s barefoot prints for newborns are inherently more casual and usually not collected rigorously. Moreover, the baby has just come out of the amniotic fluid with delicate skin and the original lines are very shallow, so it is difficult to see clearly and even more difficult to clear. In addition, with the passage of time, the imprint became even more blurred." Ye Ruiren recalled.

Therefore, before the formal appraisal, he conducted a careful analysis and discussion with several other experienced appraisers.

Everyone is worried about the barefoot prints whose lines are so blurred that they can hardly find their characteristics. With age, Xiaoshengnan’s foot print lines will now become longer and the characteristic parts may change, which increases the ratio. Right difficulty.

Prior to this, the Sijianyuan had not identified a footprint identification similar to that of a newborn baby.

Thinking that this was the only chance for the girl to "fall in Shanghai", Ye Ruiren decided to gnaw on this hard bone.

After carefully observing the microscope for several days, Ye Ruiren found that a small area of the front edge of the barefoot print might be able to find stable details.

So, he zoomed in on this small area to find features, and finally found 14 stable detailed features, which were compared with the same parts of Li Shengnan today, and found that the features were exactly the same.

It took 5 days, and this hard bone was finally gnawed down by him.

Ye Ruiren recalled the scene at the time, “The eyes are often tired and weeping. But what we rely on is eyesight and meticulousness. After all, details determine success or failure.”

According to the relevant technical specifications of judicial authentication, fingerprint and barefoot print identification usually need to find more than 8 identical stable characteristic points to prove that the two belong to the same person, and Ye Ruiren found 14 stable points on such vague barefoot prints. Characteristic points.

Later, Li's father and Li's mother took the fingerprints and barefoot prints identification opinions given by the Sijianyuan, and went to the hospital to reissue a birth medical certificate, and the problem of "falling in Shanghai" was solved.

To express his gratitude, Xiao Shengnan took Ye Ruiren's hand and took a group photo.

"Do you feel dull and boring when you face the instrument every day?" a reporter from the "Rule of Law Daily" asked.

"No! There are so many things in every inch, so enjoy it." Ye Ruiren replied.

2021 is Ye Ruiren's tenth year of working in the Sijianyuan.

In the past 10 years, he has handled more than 300 cases every year on average, but he is still as enthusiastic as ever, because "every time he sees that his work results can help people like Xiao Shengnan, the joy in his heart is beyond words."
