“The sergeant major was responsible for checking the area on which the animal was located. But it wasn't necessary to go there, ”said the spokesman. “He could have carried out the check from where he was. For reasons unknown to us, he has approached the place where the animals were staying. There he was attacked by the deer. Such an attack is unprecedented. ”As Urdapilleta went on to explain, the camera images show how the soldier made a movement with his hand. The deer then attacked him.

The animal is an axis deer that is actually not native to Latin America, but to India, Sri Lanka and Nepal.

The 50-year-old President Mario Abdo Benítez, who has ruled the South American country since 2018, shares his predecessors' preference for exotic animals.

Even when they took office, they acquired extraordinary animals.

For example, other presidents kept a pony, a parrot and an ostrich on the premises.

With the deer, this tradition now has fatal consequences for the first time.

The widowed soldier who died in the attack leaves behind a ten-year-old daughter.
