• Loose end Magritte's moment

The museums of the art triangle of Madrid, (Museo del Prado, Reina Sofía and Thyssen) the Guggenheim of Bilbao and Caixa Forum have announced the balance of public influx for the year 2021, the first since the pandemic forced them to close in spring 2020. All centers have improved their attendance figures compared to 2020, although they are still far from the 2019 levels.

In 2020, the arrival of the covid caused visits to museums to plummet by 70%;

in 2021 the influx to large museums represents

between 30 and 60% of the volume of the last year prior to the epidemic

.

The Prado Museum has received 1,175,296 visitors in 2021, which represents an increase of 32.2 percent over the previous year.

As detailed by the museum in a note,

1,126,641 people came to its headquarters in Madrid

and another 48,655 visited the rooms in different Spanish locations where the Prado has been present with temporary exhibitions.

In 2019, the Prado had 3.2 million visits.

Since the museum reopened in June 2020 (June-December 2020 vs. June-December 2021), the increase in public has been 194.78 percent.

The public profile is still

mostly young

(48% of visitors between 18 and 34 years old) and female (58.6%) and, although since the pandemic began, more than half of the influx has been from the Community Madrid, in 2021 there has been a progressive increase in visitors from the rest of Spain (20.2%) and foreign visitors (26.1%).

On the other hand, the

online

project

of the Museo Nacional del Prado already has more than 3.7 million followers on social networks, including 319,000 Tik Tok users.

In a year marked by the centenary of the birth of Baron Thyssen-Bornemisza, the Thyssen Museum has received 671,078 visitors, a figure that represents

an increase of 97% compared to 2020

, when only 341,008 visitors were counted.

In 2019, 1.03 million people visited the Thyssen.

The number of visitors to the Reina Sofía Museum has grown by 30% in 2021 compared to last year.

A total 1,643,108 people have been in its rooms, almost 400,000 more than in 2020, the museum has confirmed in a note.

In 2019, 4.4 million people visited the Reina.

Of these, 619,331 correspond to the main headquarters, 746,406 to the Palacio de Cristal and 277,371 to the Velázquez, both located in the Retiro Park.

The flow of the public has been increasing progressively from May to

the end of the last four months with "figures similar to those of the years prior to the pandemic."

In Bilbao, the Guggenheim Museum has received

530,967 visitors

, which is 6% more than expected due to the increase in public in the second part of the year.

In 2019, 1.17 million people visited the Guggenheim.

Thanks to this upturn in visits and activity, the exhibition center managed to raise its level of self-financing to 62% in 2021, although it is still far from the prepandemic percentage, when it reached 71%.

The

"la Caixa" Foundation

also

increased its visits to the eight CaixaForum and CosmoCaixa, where it received 5.2 million visitors in the different cultural, scientific and educational proposals in 2021, which has meant 1.3 million more people than in 2020.

Meanwhile, the two rooms of the

Mapfre

Foundation

in Madrid and Barcelona registered 220,368 visitors, which means that their visits have increased by just over 62% compared to 2020.
