For those suffering from arthritis: eat this food

The NHS says it is very important to eat a healthy, balanced diet if you have arthritis.

Eating healthy food will give you all the nutrients you need and help you maintain a healthy weight, according to the Express.

The Arthritis UK Foundation says you should eat beans 'twice a week' or more to stave off bothersome symptoms of arthritis.

"Beans are full of fiber and phytonutrients, which help lower C-reactive protein, an indicator of inflammation in the blood," the foundation explained.

She added that beans are also an "excellent and inexpensive source of protein" and an antioxidant food, according to Sabq newspaper.

The charity explains that while there is no diet that can cure arthritis, some foods have been shown to strengthen bones, maintain the immune system and fight inflammation.

She suggests that adding these foods to a balanced diet may help relieve pain and other symptoms of arthritis.

"If you're overweight, losing weight can really help you deal with arthritis," the NHS said. "The extra weight puts extra stress on the joints in the hips, knees, ankles and feet, leading to increased pain and problems with movement."

The NHS notes that there are a number of factors that can relieve pain so patients can live with arthritis, and that can also help slow the progression of the condition and reduce inflammation, such as quitting smoking. The Mayo Clinic explains: "Smoking puts pressure on the connective tissues, which can increase arthritis pain."
