A spider from a banana box has bitten a supermarket employee in the Osnabrück district.

The man had been taken to a hospital for observation, said a police spokeswoman on Wednesday.

"But it is not dangerous," emphasized the officer.

After the bite, the market was cleared immediately.

Police officers and members of the fire brigade searched for the crawling animal together with a spider expert for around three hours.

The search was stopped at around 5.45 p.m.

"We couldn't control the spider yet," said the police spokeswoman.

Whether the shop could reopen on Thursday will now be clarified in consultation with the trade supervisory office, the public order office and possibly also the veterinary authority.

Time and again spiders are discovered in banana boxes.

In this case, the bananas came from Colombia and the Dominican Republic, according to police.

What kind of spider it was is unclear.

According to experts, bites from poisonous spiders are not necessarily dangerous to humans.
