If something is clear, it is that sleep is essential for health.

"We are animals and we

need to rest, allow our body to repair itself,

" explained Harvard Medical School researcher Rebecca Robbins, in an interview with Yo Dona.

"The ideal sleep is seven to eight hours," he added, although he specifies that quality is often almost more important than quantity.

What is not known is how long a person can go without sleep, only that the health consequences begin after 72 hours of wakefulness.

Due to the danger posed by an experiment of these characteristics,

no investigations have been carried out

with which to discover the human limit.

However, there is a precedent that sheds some light on this question.

Talking about the days someone awake can take involves mentioning

Randy Gardner

.

Its history dates back to 1965, the year in which this American teenager decided to break the current record and stay

awake for more than 260 hours

.

And he did it after 264 hours, which meant he went 11 days without sleep.

The adverse health effects of not sleeping

The case of Randy Gardner establishes, at least, a basic fact of what the human body is capable of supporting being deprived of sleep.

And the list of symptoms is not exactly short: muscle pain, migraines,

fainting, tremors

, dizziness, hypertension,

loss of contact with reality

, weakening of the senses such as sight or touch, among others.

Physician William Dement, known as the father of sleep study at Stanford University, had the opportunity to follow Randy Gardner during his challenge.

In his research he described the deterioration of the young man over the days without sleep.

The

former

were accentuated

motor difficulties

, problems recognizing objects, irascibility and

memory lapses.

But from the fourth on the signs of weakening of the body were more marked: hallucinations, delusions, speech complications, paranoia.

Spending 10 days without sleep made it difficult for him to articulate words

, think, or lose track of what he was doing in a matter of moments.

"If we do not do it, many natural hormonal systems go out of control,

obesity increases and many other diseases such

as dementia or Alzheimer's", warns the Harvard researcher.

It is proven, sleep (well) is synonymous with health.
