The process is not new, but it continues to claim victims.
Scammers pose as celebrities in order to extract money from fans.
Some usurp the identity of Keanu Reeves, currently on the
Matrix Resurrections
poster
, reports Los Angeles Times, relayed by Presse-Citron.
Several victims have been recorded around the world.
Always with the same operating mode.
A fake account contacts fans by email or private message on social media or dating sites.
An intimacy is then established with the victim, to coax him or her.
Selected victims
And these victims are well chosen.
They are generally elderly women, alone and not used to social networks or the Internet.
Several weeks or months of seduction are then necessary, to create an attachment.
The first case was identified in Canada in 2017, where a woman had claimed to have been stolen nearly $ 3,000 by a fake Keanu Reeves.
The bogus actor had claimed to be in Turkey for a shoot and made believe that his accounts had been blocked by the government.
She is voluntarily approached
Recently, an American living in Arkansas even wanted to move to Los Angeles to be closer to the actor, and would have put his house up for sale.
A relative of this victim tried to find out more about this scam.
She created a fake Instagram account pretending to be a stylish elderly woman.
She then subscribed to several fan accounts of the actor.
She claims to have been contacted by five fake Keanu Reeves.
He was quickly asked to pay $ 2,000 in bitcoin to meet the actor.
This choice of Keanu Reeves could be explained by the fact that the actor is adored by many people.
Several qualities are recognized to him, in particular his lack of interest in the front of the scene, which makes him even more popular.
