A few days before the end of year celebrations, Emmanuel Macron again called on Thursday, December 23, the French to "take care of each other" in particular by tests or self-tests before finding their loved ones.

The risk is high in the face of the fifth wave of Covid-19 and the arrival of the Omicron variant.

But which test to choose, when and where to perform it?

It is possible to perform a PCR test a few days before the family or social gathering to get the most reliable result possible.

But the waiting times, between 24 and 48 hours, make it the longest test.

PCR tests are carried out in medical analysis laboratories and in certain pharmacies.

They are free for vaccinated people and cost a minimum of 44 euros for an unvaccinated adult without a prescription.

Carry out the self-test on the day of the event

The antigen test and the self-test appear to be more suitable for the holiday season.

Although they are less reliable, the Scientific Council recommends being screened by a self-test on the day of the event or by an antigen test, the day before or the same day.

You will have a result in about fifteen minutes.

Self-tests are sold on average 5.20 euros per unit in pharmacies but are not reimbursed by health insurance.

On the other hand, they have the advantage of being able to be carried out anywhere and anytime.

Many pharmacies offer to perform antigenic tests with or without an appointment.

They are free for vaccinated people on presentation of the health pass and a vital card otherwise they cost 25 euros.

Isolate yourself if you are in contact

The Scientific Council also detailed the recommendations to be applied during the end of the year celebrations, to limit contamination with Covid-19.

This involves limiting the number of participants, ensuring that frail people have received their booster dose, but also regularly ventilating the premises.

If you are in contact or have symptoms of Covid-19, in both cases you should isolate yourself and get tested immediately.

For contact cases, a second test should be carried out "7 days after the last contact with the sick person or 17 days after the onset of symptoms or the sample if you share their home".

An isolation period must be observed if it is a contact with the Omicron variant, as indicated by Medicare.

More than 6.2 million Covid-19 screening tests were carried out last week according to Public Health France, a record since the start of the epidemic in March 2020.
