ご起床後は上皇后さまとお庭をご散策になり、朝食をお済ませの後は、上皇后さまと寺田寅彦の「柿の種」を音読なさり、新聞をご覧になります。

とりわけ今年は、上皇后さまのお誕生日に際しても紹介した通り、57年ぶりに東京でオリンピック、パラリンピックが開催され、後にオランダ国女王陛下となられるベアトリクス王女殿下とご一緒にご覧になった神永昭夫選手とアントン・ヘーシンク選手の柔道無差別級試合、現在のノルウェー・ハラルド5世国王陛下がまだ皇太子で選手として参加されたヨット競技等、当時いくつもの競技をご覧になったことを懐かしそうに思い出していらっしゃいました。
また、今日のパラリンピックとは隔世の感のある素朴で質素な昭和39年の東京パラリンピックと、これを契機として、陛下のご提案で翌年から始められた全国身体障害者スポーツ大会の歴史を振り返られ、障害者スポーツの発展をお喜びになっていらっしゃいました。
陛下は、平成元年9月30日、札幌市で開催された第25回全国身体障害者スポーツ大会開会式のお言葉の中で、第1回岐阜県から昭和62年の第23回沖縄県まで毎回見守られた大会の発展を感慨深く振り返られ、25年の歳月が各地に障害者のスポーツに対する理解を育て、障害を持つ多くの人々がスポーツを通じて新たな人生を見いだしてきた意義に触れられ、大会を育ててきた関係者の尽力に感謝なさり、国民の間に障害者のスポーツに対する理解が更に増進することを願われています。
宮中祭祀については、ご在位中はもとより今も引き続き一番大切にお考えで、祭祀が行われる間、両陛下はいつも静かにお慎みになっていらっしゃいます。
今年も新嘗祭に際し、両陛下は天皇陛下の出御に合わせてお慎みの時を過ごされ、暁の儀が終了する深夜までお慎みをお続けになりました。

生物学研究所でのご研究は、昨年5月末から再開され、今年5月には、共著者と共に「日本から得られたオキナワハゼ属Callogobius（ハゼ科）の2新種の記載」（原題:Description of two new species of Callogobius（Gobiidae）found in japan）と題する論文を発表され、ご論文は日本魚類学会の英文誌（lchthyologicaI Research）オンライン版に掲載されました。
陛下はこれまで日本魚類学会会員として同学会誌に29編の論文を、その他の学術雑誌等に魚類に関する英文論文4編を、また、魚類以外でも国立科学博物館研究報告として「皇居におけるタヌキの食性」に関する論文2編（共著）を発表されており、今回の論文は36編目となります。
現在、生物学研究所職員と日本の河川に生息するチチブ類3種（チチブ、ヌマチチブ、ナガノゴリ）についてのご研究、とりわけ分布域が重複するチチブとヌマチチブの鱒の機能と遊泳行動の関係を明らかにするための実験観察をお続けになっていらっしゃるほか、日本産クモハゼ属の分類学的再検討についてのご研究もお始めになっています。
なお、陛下は、魚類学のご研究業績により、昭和55年に50名限定のロンドン・リンネ協会外国会員の一人に選ばれていらっしゃるほか、平成10年には、英国王立協会（ロイヤル・ソサエティ）から、科学の進歩に顕著な貢献のあった元首に贈られるチャールズ二世メダルの世界初の受賞者となっていらっしゃいます。
ご譲位により、公的なご活動からは離れられましたが、日々のご生活の中で、今も変わりなく、苦労や困難の中にある人々を案じ、それを支える人々の活動に思いを致され、人々の幸せと社会の安寧を願っていらっしゃいます。
ご高齢となり、時折お歳相応にお忘れになったり、ご記憶が不確かになられることはおありですが、いつも一緒にいらっしゃる上皇后さまにお尋ねになり、事実を確かめられては、「そうだったね」と笑顔で得心されるご様子をよく拝見します。
