The 5th wave continues to grow.

As the holidays approach, the Covid-19 does not take a vacation and continues to grow in Île-de-France.

This is what the figures from Public Health France, published on Wednesday.

Epidemiological data from the public institution indicate that 10,300 new daily contaminations were recorded over the last week in Île-de-France.

Data that seems to confirm the forecasts of Public Health France which expects to reach 25,000 cases in the next few days.

Ile-de-France, region most affected by the Omicron variant

All the lights are on the red for these end-of-year celebrations since the incidence calculated this Wednesday reached 674 cases per 100,000, an increase of 29% in one week and the positivity rate observed is at 6.6%, a 10% increase over the same period.

This runaway is undoubtedly related to the Omicron variant which is making a dazzling breakthrough.

While it represented less than 5% of cases a week ago, it is detected in 25% of new cases to date.

The ultra-majority Delta variant since this summer is a drop in the number of cases detected while its "competitor" Omicron could represent nearly 3 in 4 cases by the end of this week.

Île-de-France is the region most affected in France by this variant.

Hospital pressure increases

As a direct consequence of these developments, the pressure on hospitals is increasing.

The occupation of establishments in conventional hospitalization (HC) and in critical care (SC) increased by nearly 12% over the week to reach 1,537 patients in HC and 618 in SC on Wednesday.

Figures lower for the moment than the 3rd wave of April (618 against 1,798 on April 4, 2021) but higher than those of the 4th wave last August (470 patients in critical care).

Our file on the coronavirus

According to Public Health France, it is vaccination, 87% of eligible Ile-de-France residents have a complete vaccination schedule, this 5th wave remains lower than others.

But the institution expects a rapid change in the epidemic situation because of the Omicron variant and recalls the importance of the booster dose and barrier gestures before, during and after the holidays.
