The research team of the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Institute of Paleospine of the Chinese Academy of Sciences) and the American Museum of Natural History have discovered two hog-tooth fossils about 48 million years ago in the Erlian Basin of Inner Mongolia, one of which is new The species is named "Ashantou hogtooth", and the other is an unspecified species of hogtooth.

The new discovery of the hog-tooth fossil and the comparative study of related hog-tooth fossils in North America were recently published in international professional academic journals.

On December 17, Bai Bin, the corresponding author of the paper and a researcher from the Institute of Paleospine of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, accepted an exclusive interview with a reporter from China News Agency in Beijing to introduce the new discovery and research results of this hogtooth fossil.

He said that the mammalian staging of the Middle Eocene in Asia was established based on the related mammalian groups in the Erlian Basin, Inner Mongolia. More in-depth and detailed research on these animal groups will further improve the framework for the staging of Asian Paleogene mammals. The comparison of mammal populations between regions or continents provides a more accurate reference.
