Heavy rains fell on the Pyrénées-Atlantiques between December 9 and 12.

Several rivers overflowed, causing flooding which particularly affected farmers in the Basque Country.

As reported by France Bleu, at least 6,000 chickens perished on a farm due to the flooding of the Nive.

Several cows also died on a farm in Ustaritz.

118 municipalities request a state of natural disaster

Traveling to Bayonne on Saturday, Gérald Darmanin decided to initiate the accelerated procedure for requesting recognition of the state of natural disaster.

Since the announcement by the Minister of the Interior, 118 municipalities in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques have submitted an application.

In detail, 54 towns in the district of Bayonne, 37 towns in the district of Oloron-Sainte-Marie and 27 in the district of Pau came forward.

The files of the town halls of the Basque Country and Béarn must be examined this Thursday on the occasion of a special interministerial commission.

"Led by the Ministry of the Interior, this body is responsible for pronouncing on the natural nature of the phenomenon as well as on its abnormal intensity", specify the services of the State.
