The police state security has started investigations into the suspicion of disturbing the peace of the dead at the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe.

The Berlin police announced on Sunday.

Afterwards, in the early afternoon, a security guard observed a young man who was urinating against a stele.

She said she spoke to him and pointed out the peculiarity of the place, the police said.

The suspect said that he knew where he was and continued to urinate.

The woman then alerted the police.

A breath alcohol test on the 20-year-old showed a value of around 1.5 per thousand.

The man was released after his personal details had been established.

The memorial, which was opened in 2005 to commemorate the roughly six million Jews murdered by the National Socialists, consists of around 2,700 dark gray concrete blocks of different heights.

According to the house rules, smoking and alcohol consumption are prohibited in the field of stelae, as well as making noise, running, or jumping from block to block.

At the beginning of November, the police hit the headlines in connection with the memorial itself after a photo had become known that showed uniformed police officers doing push-ups on the stone blocks.

Police chief Barbara Slowik apologized publicly.
