• Sex and the City heroines Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) and Charlotte (Kristin Davis) are back onscreen in

    And Just Like That.

  • In France, the series is available in US + 24 on the Salto platform.

  • How does this revival attempt to make up for the main flaw of the original series?

A trio of smart fifties as we see too rarely on the screen! In

And Just Like That, a

new chapter of

Sex and the City

for HBO Max, broadcast since Friday on Salto, Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) and Charlotte (Kristin Davis) are back but without Samantha (Kim Cattrall) (who left Big Apple for Big Ben), for ten new adventures after the second film. How does this revival attempt to make up for the main flaw of the original series?

“Getting together in a way we are so proud of is frankly a dream come true, I think, for the three of us,” says Cynthia Nixon, with whom

20 Minutes

spoke during an organized videoconference by HBO.

And to explain: “We wanted to revive

Sex and the City

in the right way.

"

And Just Like That

takes the DNA of the original series: “Friendship is a major theme, how to try to find a balance between work and private life, and of course sex!

», Summarizes the actress.

A series that assumes its "gray hair"

Like Miranda who assumes her hair turned gray,

And Just Like That

perfectly assumes the aging of its characters. “When you have gray hair and decide to leave it natural, that's kind of a big statement. Miranda seemed like the perfect character to do this on behalf of the band, ”she says.

Apart from

Les Craquantes

(

Golden Girls

) in the 1980s, and recently the Israeli series

Hamishim

(available on Arte. Tv) and Julie Delpy's series

On The Verge

(available on MyCanal), it is rare to see series centered on women over 50. “It's one of the most exciting aspects of this series,” says Cynthia Nixon. “We're proud of it,” adds Kristin Davis. “Turning 55 can be a very rich period in a woman's life,” recalls Cynthia Nixon.

The series is also inspired by the experience of actresses.

“Michael Patrick King [the showrunner] still borrows as much of our own life and transposes into the series.

"

And Just Like that

shows characters" fulfilled in their lives "but also others" like Miranda at the start of a crisis ", summarizes Cynthia Nixon.

“This age in your life can be a time when everything you have worked for in your life is coming true, but also, like Miranda, a time when you wake up one day and say to yourself, 'j 've spent the last thirty years on this path, I don't want to spend the next 30 years there "", she explains.

Heroines facing "new challenges"

Carrie "is on this new sex podcast," how will this new job affect her relationship with Mr. Big (Chris Noth)?

Still married to Steve Brady (David Eigenberg), after twenty years in business law, Miranda is studying for a Masters in Human Rights.

A reconversion linked to "the Trump years, Black Lives Matter and the demonstrations around the George Floyd affair", according to Cynthia Nixon.

Harry Goldenblatt's (Evan Handler) wife Charlotte is focused on raising her two teenage daughters, Lily, an accomplished pianist and Rose, a tomboy, much to her mother's dismay.

“She is facing new challenges.

The need to control everything is a central theme of Charlotte.

Being a parent automatically means that you have lost some control because you cannot control your children, ”analyzes Kristin Davis.

An original series with "two major flaws"

Sex and the City

has often been criticized

for the very white bubble in which its characters evolve.

“I've always been very proud of our series, but I've always thought it had two major flaws.

One was the incredible lack of diversity and the other was to see New York as if there were only rich people living there, ”abounds Cynthia Nixon.

“We have a lot of new friends, that's one of the big news,” says Kristin Davis. If

And Just Like That

does not evolve in terms of social diversity, this new chapter thus corrects the situation with four new non-white characters: Che Diaz (Sara Ramirez from

Grey's Anatomy

), the boss of Mexican origin, queer and not binary of Carrie, Seema Patel (Sarita Choudhury of

Homeland

), a powerful real estate agent, Lisa Todd Wexley (Nicole Ari Parker of

Empire

), a student mom Charlotte wants to impress, and Dr. Nya Wallace (Karen Pittman of

The Morning Show

), Miranda's brilliant law professor.

“They will bring a lot to our lives and change our outlook,” says Kristin Davis.

“We were a quartet, there are only three of the original four characters left… But I no longer think of us as a trio, but as a septet,” says Cynthia Nixon.

In

And Just Like That

, the original trio

Sex and the City

thus integrates the issues around LGBT +, feminist and anti-racist struggles ... Unfortunately, more often with big clogs than with the delicacy of a pair of Manolo Blahnik!
