The result was beyond doubt, with the call for the non-participation of the FLNKS and separatists of all stripes.

For its third referendum since 2018 on the issue, New Caledonia voted widely against independence according to partial results.

At 5 p.m., the turnout was hardly 41.60%, in free fall compared to the previous polls, where it rose at the same time to 73.68% in 2018 then 79.63% in 2020. These Previous referendums, organized as part of the decolonization process of the Noumea Accord, were won by the pro-France with 56.7% and then 53.3% of the vote.

The dialogue is not over, however. The Nouméa Accords in fact provided for the possibility of maintaining New Caledonia in the Republic after the three referendums. Discussions will now begin to give the “Caillou” a new status. But the FLNKS has already refused to meet Sébastien Lecornu, Minister of Overseas Affairs, who arrived in Nouméa on Friday. Considering not to have been able to organize a "fair campaign" because of the coronavirus epidemic, the independence party had announced that it wanted to challenge the result before international bodies.

New Caledonia has been included since 1986 on the list of non-self-governing territories to be decolonized by the UN, which has also sent experts to ensure the proper conduct of the ballot.

Emmanuel Macron is due to speak at 1 p.m. on the result of the ballot and the continuation of relations with New Caledonia.
