The recession is slow and the floods still affect, this Sunday, part of the Landes and the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, hit for three days by severe bad weather.

Clean-up operations have nevertheless started.

In the Landes, around fifty firefighters were mobilized to accompany the victims to their homes and assess the damage, said the prefecture.

In Peyrehorade, surrounded by water, sweepers and road washers surveyed the town to restore the streets covered with mud, after the end of pumping operations.

Make people "be able to spend Christmas at home"

“We're in the tricky part now.

We hope there won't be too much damage.

We have to go quickly so that people can spend Christmas at home, ”said its mayor Didier Sakellarides.

Security forces filtered access to the bridge, above Gaves Réunis, to allow residents to return to their homes "without being bothered by onlookers who would interfere with cleaning operations," said the city councilor.

Solidarity was also being organized, with a dozen volunteers who came forward to the town hall to help residents in need.

About twenty of them are hosted by the Red Cross.

In the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, operations were also underway, especially in the town of Laruns, crossed by a torrent of mud on Friday.

The department had about thirty firefighters also mobilized.

Seventeen departmental roads still closed

The quays of Bayonne, on the banks of the Nive, had found their cobblestones this Sunday morning, noted an AFP correspondent.

The Christmas festivities, planned the day before, continued in the city center with the passage of Olentzero, a character from Basque mythology disguised as a coalman and giving treats to children.

Seventeen departmental roads were still closed to traffic at midday, according to the prefecture.

Orange vigilance has changed to yellow for the Adour Amont-Echez and Bec des Gaves sections, according to the latest bulletin from the Vigiecrues surveillance network.

It has been completely lifted for the Gave de Pau Béarnais, Saison, Gave d'Oloron, Confluence Adour-Nive and Nivelle sections.
